Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent all kinds of network issues.
If there's one thing every savvy system administrator knows, it's that it doesn't matter how detailed your plans are. You can never be 100% sure how your organization’s IT infrastructure will evolve, and what your monitoring needs will look like, even one year from now.
Perhaps you'll add Linux or mac components to your Windows-based setup. Or move from exclusively on-premises server monitoring to the cloud. Maybe even ditch your Cisco routers for another brand.
Whatever happens, though, your job will be much simpler if your network monitoring solution can handle the changes seamlessly — it’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about having on your plate. That’s why we’ve built PRTG with flexibility at its core.
Whether you’re in charge of a small local network and a tiny IT budget, or a large, distributed environment, you’ll get access to the same functionality and level of service. Because, while you might not know for certain what your network will become, you’ll have a much easier time ensuring it keeps performing at its best if your network monitoring solution can adapt to it straight away.
With support for unlimited network devices and exhaustive monitoring capabilities and support for unlimited local and distributed network devices, there’s (almost) nothing PRTG can’t handle.
Servers, routers, firewalls, mySQL and other databases, uptime, VoIP... the list goes on. That means you can maintain peak network performance, optimize on the fly, and make sure key vendors are respecting their SLAs.

No, really. PRTG tracks every network variable imaginable, in one single monitoring environment you can tailor to suit your exact requirements. Oh, and getting it up and running couldn't be quicker or simpler.
Download the .exe file, key in an IP address range, and PRTG will take it from there. Auto-Discovery finds all your connected network devices, assigns the appropriate sensors, and starts monitoring them round the clock right away.
Your entire IT infrastructure's health and performance at a glance. Track hardware, software, virtualized components and environmental factors, both locally and remotely. PRTG's system of remote probes makes it ideal for monitoring complex, distributed networks.
Tailor everything to your exact requirements. Create custom sensors, design bespoke dashboards, graphs, and other visualizations as well as reporting templates, and pick your preferred performance and alert thresholds so you can nip potential problems in the bud.
Think a network monitoring tool can't be broad and detailed? Think again. PRTG's sensor-based monitoring, breadth of functionality, and customization give you ultimate visibility and control, enabling you to get as granular as you need to without sacrificing ease of use.

PRTG is set up in a matter of minutes and can be used on a wide variety of mobile devices.
We also compared PRTG with other monitoring tools:
Wireshark is best known as an open-source packet analyzer for network inspection. While excellent for troubleshooting it lack automated alerting, long-term monitoring and requires expertise to use effectively.
Open Hardware Monitor is powerful, accurate, and lightweight, but it can only monitor individual hardware devices locally. If you want to keep a close eye on every aspect of an enterprise network, choose PRTG.
New Relic offers strong asset performance management and observability, but full IT infrastructure monitoring can be costly and requires a fair amount of manual configuration.
Site24x7 is a robust all-in-one monitoring tool, but its cloud-only model and pricing can be costly and impractical for large, complex IT setups or on-premises monitoring needs.
Real-time notifications mean faster troubleshooting so that you can act before more serious issues occur.

Choosing between Paessler PRTG and Observium depends on several factors, such as your specific network monitoring needs, budget, and technical resources available in your organization.
PRTG is ideal:
Observium might be your choice:
PRTG is the better network monitoring platform for large, complex, or growing enterprise networks, and it’s not even close.
“Of course you’d say that,” we hear you say. But it’s not that we’re biased. It’s that PRTG genuinely is more powerful, scalable, and flexible, and here’s why:
Both PRTG and Observium have free versions and paid versions, but they’re structured differently.
With Observium, the features you have access to depend on which plan you’re on. The most advanced functionality is only available on the most expensive plan, while the free version has limited features, fewer updates, and only community-based support.
By contrast, PRTG uses sensor-based pricing. This means you can access PRTG’s full suite of features and the same level of service, including expert customer support, regardless of which plan you’re on. Intead, you pay for the metrics you want to monitor. The free plan includes 100 sensors, and you pay for access to additional sensors. You can also reduce the number of sensors you use at any time, no questions asked.
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
