PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Get comprehensive Linux hardware monitoring, even on a Windows network, with PRTG

Stop babysitting your servers

Sysadmins have enough on their plate – like troubleshooting surprise CPU spikes that leave you sweating, or dependencies turning your system into a tangled mess.

Paessler PRTG solves the issue of cross-platform monitoring by offering real-time insights into Linux, Unix, and Windows systems, without worrying about compatibility. Whether you’re monitoring CPU usage, memory usage, or looking for bottlenecks, PRTG’s real-time performance monitoring covers it all from one central platform.

Ditch the server room sauna

Part of system administration is keeping your server room cooled down. When your hardware is trying to have a meltdown, you need to quickly dial back the heat.

PRTG’s system monitoring tool includes SSH SAN System Health sensors that keep track of your server temperatures. With real-time temperature alerts, you’ll know when to act before your server room turns into a hardware barbecue.

Clock out on time

If you’ve been in system administration for any length of time, you know that Linux servers seem to have a knack for breaking down right before the weekend.

With PRTG’s predictive maintenance tools, you can catch potential issues like overheating, overloading, or system resource shortages, before they turn into full-blown disasters. By setting up command-line queries or using APIs, you can automate the entire process (and go home at 5PM on Fridays).

Never run out of disk space

If your disks are filling up faster than you can say “Oh, no!” and you’re constantly scrambling for space, it’s probably time to upgrade your Linux monitoring tool. PRTG comes to the rescue with SNMP Disk Free v2 and SNMP Linux Disk Free sensors.

These tools ensure your filesystem stays healthy by monitoring disk capacity and sending alerts long before you hit critical levels. No more getting blindsided by those pesky “disk full” errors.

Play cross-platform harmony

Juggling Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Unix systems, and monitoring them all can feel like herding cats, each with its own quirks and dependencies. But PRTG doesn’t care what you’re running.

Whether it’s Ubuntu, Debian, Distro, Red Hat, or some other flavor of Linux, PRTG's preconfigured sensors provide performance monitoring of all major systems from one platform. Now your network runs like a well-tuned orchestra, instead of chaos.

What Linux hardware monitoring looks like in PRTG

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

“From a server perspective, we're monitoring all of the key components of our service such as CPU usage, RAM disk space, the Windows services that it's running, and network connectivity of that server. In terms of networks, we’re monitoring all of our switches, firewalls, and access points. It’s really useful to be able to easily pull performance metrics from the PRTG dashboard.”

Ollie Kerslake, Infrastructure Lead
Riverford Organic Farmers

“The tool has given us greater control over all types of devices connected to the network (switches, IP telephony, security cameras, IoT, WiFi) that previously remained opaque when dealing with service incidents. This has improved our ability to diagnose and resolve problems, which has translated into greater efficiency and a better user experience in both internal and public services.”

Jordi Tolosà Bel, New Technologies Technician
Vinaroz City Council

“Our objective was to be able to monitor the health of our most critical servers containing data and applications, but also the flows and bandwidth between headquarters, our 50 servers in the cloud and the 15 servers at our production sites. For us, it is essential to have a proactive approach to understand where the weaknesses of the IT system are to be able to improve them.”

Linux Hardware Monitoring: FAQ

What is Linux hardware monitoring?

Linux hardware refers to PCs, laptops, or notebooks installed with Linux, as well as systems and servers that run the open-source operating system Linux. Linux hardware monitoring with PRTG refers to the use of specialized sensors to monitor the health, performance, and availability of hardware components within Linux-based systems. These sensors track vital metrics like CPU load, memory, disk usage, temperature, and I/O operations.

Why is Linux hardware monitoring important?

If you let CPU loads and hard disk space get out of control, your Linux running processes are going to crawl. And nobody likes slow apps. Keeping an eye on your hardware is crucial—if something starts underperforming, you need to know so you can swap it out before it breaks and ruins your day. Plus, if your hardware gets too hot, things will slow down or even fry. The solution? Monitor everything. Keep resources in the sweet spot and tweak your network for optimal performance when needed.

What all does PRTG Linux hardware monitoring analyze?

PRTG provides a comprehensive overview of system health and performance. Our software analyzes CPU performance, disk space usage, memory capacity, system load, system processes, and hardware temperature, among other metrics. It can also monitor disk I/O operations, physical disk health, and server response times.

Which PRTG sensor monitors the temperature of Linux systems?

Temperature monitoring is extremely important, especially for servers: When systems are overloaded, their operating temperatures rise quickly. This can lead to a drop in the reliability of servers. Not to mention service interruptions and failures. In the worst case scenario, data can be lost or hardware damaged.

The SSH SAN System Health is ideal here: it will keep a constant eye on the system status of a storage area network. Among other things, this sensor provides you with information on the:

  • Voltage of the capacitor in volts (V)
  • Voltage of the capacitor pack
  • Temperature of the hard disk controller
  • Temperature of the storage controller
  • Onboard temperature
What alert options does PRTG provide for Linux monitoring?

PRTG offers customizable alerts via email, SMS, push notifications, and even integration with services like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Alerts are triggered based on threshold values you define for various metrics.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
