PRODUCT OVERVIEW

What's your backup plan C?

There's nothing worse than feeling safe and sound – and then realizing the backup you performed of some really important data didn't actually take place. Just imagine it: severe data loss. Work must be redone, deadlines cannot be met, business processes are interrupted, and the trust of customers and business partners is likewise on the line. And not to mention the costs…

So what if your backups fail, and you don't realize it until it's too late?

Paessler PRTG's sophisticated backup monitoring sensors keep an eye on all backup software you use, no matter the vendor. Verify that all your data backups are completed successfully, and be alerted the second something goes wrong.

That means you can always count on your backups when it’s important. No more unpleasant (and costly) surprises.

How backup monitoring works: The nuts and bolts of PRTG

sensor

IMAP sensor

The cornerstone of PRTG's backup-monitoring tool is a powerful IMAP sensor that scans your emails for specific keywords.

Like a hyper-alert postal worker, the sensor makes short work of your backup notification emails, homing in on error messages and letting you know about them straight away, so you can fix issues and back up your data successfully.

sensor

Veeam sensors

Veeam is your backup solution? Congratulations, you have chosen a powerful tool! To monitor it, use the Veeam Backup Job Status sensor or the Veeam Backup Job Status Advanced sensor for individual backup jobs.

The sensors show you the number of successful, failed, running and finished job runs, job runs in a warning state, the number of all scheduled backup jobs, and the duration.

sensor

Other backup sensors

PRTG also has a host of other backup monitoring, empowering you to keep an eye out for:

  • Backup errors of your Active Directory, with the Active Directory Replication Errors v2 sensor
  • Changes to the time stamp of backup files, with the File sensor
  • The oldest and newest files in a backup folder, with the Folderor the Local Folder sensor
  • Custom backup monitoring using scripts, with the EXE/Script sensor

Explore our preconfigured PRTG sensors for backup monitoring

PRTG comes with more than 250 native sensor types for monitoring your entire on-premises, cloud, and hybrid cloud environment out of the box. Check out some examples below!

Veeam Backup Job Status

The Veeam Backup Job Status sensor monitors the status of all backup job runs on the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager in the last 24 hours. It can show the following:

  • Number of running and finished job runs (sessions)
  • Number of successful and failed job runs
  • Number of jobs in the warning status
  • Number of scheduled backup jobs

Veeam Backup Job Status Advanced

The Veeam Backup Job Status Advanced sensor monitors the status of a specific backup job that runs on the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager. It can show the following:

  • Duration of the backup job run
  • If the backup job is scheduled
  • Time since the last backup job run
  • last backup job run status
  • Backup job run status

Active Directory Replication Errors

The Active Directory Replication Errors sensor checks a Windows domain controller (DC) for replication errors. It can show the following:

  • Number of (modified) consecutive synchronization failures
  • If the source is deleted or if the scheduled synchronization is disabled
  • Time of the last synchronization attempt and synchronization success
  • Number of pending replication operations
  • Result of the last synchronization

Folder

The Folder sensor monitors a folder via Server Message Block (SMB). You can monitor file changes and file ages. It can show the following:

  • Execution time
  • Number of files in the folder
  • Folder size
  • Time since the newest modification of a file in the folder (newest file)
  • Time since the oldest modification of a file in the folder (oldest file)

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

“Since using PRTG, we have matured how we report out overall application uptime, maintenance, and mean time between failure for all critical applications to our board of directors. PRTG allows us to not just look at a single event, but to leverage historical data to prevent future failures and to measure how we are making improvements over time.”

Bill Sorrells, CTO
Dayton Children's Hospital

“We have found these sophisticated levels of monitoring to be highly effective, improving the end user’s experience of the systems and applications in use, giving us the opportunity to provide a proactive resolution rather than having the end user raise issues.”

Saif Akil, Head of Service Management
Acurus

“Before PRTG, applications and hardware all gave messages, but all separately, so we had to search through hundreds of e-mails to find the problem. It was always only afterwards that we saw that something was going on within the infrastructure. To mitigate the issue, we also considered other software. PRTG stood out because of its user-friendliness, flexibility and minimal consultancy investment.”

Wim Vandenberghe, ICT Manager

Backup Monitoring: FAQ

What is backup monitoring?

Backup monitoring is the process of regularly checking and overseeing the status and performance of backup environments to ensure the successful and timely completion of data backups. This involves verifying that backup jobs run as scheduled, data is accurately copied, and backup storage remains accessible. Monitoring also includes identifying and addressing any errors, failures, or issues that may arise during the backup process, including generating comprehensive backup reports.

What are the benefits of monitoring backups?

There are several advantages of backup monitoring:

  • Monitoring backups ensures that data is accurately and completely copied, maintaining the integrity of critical information.
  • Regular monitoring allows for the prompt detection of errors, failures, or issues in the backup process, enabling quick resolution before they become significant problems.
  • By consistently monitoring backups, organizations can verify the availability and usability of backup data, ensuring readiness for swift recovery in the event of data loss or system failures.
  • Monitoring helps maintain the reliability of backup systems, reducing the risk of data loss and increasing confidence in the overall backup infrastructure.
  • Identifying and resolving issues promptly through monitoring improves the efficiency of the backup process, minimizing downtime and potential data loss.
What is PRTG backup monitoring software?

PRTG is a proprietary software tool that takes the effort out of ensuring all your data backups are completed successfully and error-free. Available for Windows-based on-premises servers or as a cloud-hosted solution, it's capable of monitoring unlimited local and remotely-connected devices, saving you time and effort, and giving you the peace of mind that all your organization's critical data is secure.

What does PRTG backup monitoring do?

PRTG tracks every backup job from start to finish and ensures it's gone well. The PRTG IMAP sensor, for example, continuously scans email backup notifications for specific keywords, and alerts you as soon as it identifies an error message. Check out our other sensor types for backup monitoring.

What else can PRTG monitor?

PRTG can monitor your whole network infrastructure, no matter how complex. We have preconfigured sensors to track a wide range of values, including network traffic, applications, bandwidth, cloud services, databases, virtual environments, availability and uptime, ports, IP addresses, hardware status, network security, and web services. You can also monitor industrial IT and OT environments using OPC UA, MQTT, or Modbus, and create custom integrations.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
