Remote Data Center Monitoring: FAQ

What is remote data center monitoring?

Remote data center monitoring gives you complete visibility into your infrastructure performance across all distributed locations through specialized monitoring tools. By providing real-time data about network performance, server status, and connectivity, you'll always know the exact state of your infrastructure. This proactive monitoring approach not only helps maintain consistent uptime but also allows you to identify and address potential issues before they develop into costly downtime situations.

Why is remote infrastructure monitoring important?

When data centers experience downtime, the resulting disruptions can lead to significant costs and lost productivity. That's why effective monitoring software is crucial - it helps you detect and resolve issues quickly, often catching problems before they can impact your operations. Through continuous data collection across both onsite and remote locations, you can optimize resources and prevent capacity problems, ensuring your infrastructure stays reliable and efficient.

How does PRTG handle distributed monitoring?

PRTG uses remote probes to collect real-time data from your distributed infrastructure. Deploy these probes at different locations to monitor servers, network devices, and applications. The PRTG core server combines data from all probes in a central dashboard for complete visibility of your data center operations.

What metrics can PRTG monitor in remote locations?

PRTG monitors essential infrastructure metrics:

• Network performance and connectivity status

• Microsoft server health and resource usage

• Response times and threshold values

• Traffic analysis through SNMP and TCP

• System availability and uptime metrics

• Physical security elements through supported sensors

How does PRTG complement environmental monitoring systems?

While PRTG focuses on comprehensive IT monitoring and data center management, it works alongside dedicated environmental monitoring systems. For specialized monitoring needs like water leak detection, airflow measurement, or cooling systems monitoring, we recommend using dedicated systems while PRTG handles the core IT infrastructure monitoring.

What notification options does PRTG offer for alerts?

PRTG provides multiple integration options:

• REST API for custom integrations

• Email alerts for infrastructure issues

• SMS messages about status changes

• Push notifications to mobile apps

• HTTP requests

• Execute custom scripts

• Syslog and SNMP traps

What about pricing and licensing?

PRTG offers flexible licensing based on the number of sensors you need for your data center monitoring system. Visit our website for current pricing options and to start your free trial. Each license includes all available sensor types and features.

Can PRTG monitor environmental conditions?

PRTG can monitor basic environmental factors through SNMP-capable devices and specific hardware sensors. While PRTG excels at IT infrastructure monitoring, for specialized environmental monitoring in your data center environment (like cooling systems, airflow, or water leak detection), we recommend using dedicated environmental monitoring systems alongside PRTG. PRTG monitors:

• Power supply status (through supported hardware sensors)

• Temperature data (via SNMP-capable sensors)

• System health metrics

• Power distribution units that support standard protocols

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
