Monitor your entire IT infrastructure

Although other free online tools measure network speed, only PRTG gives you comprehensive network monitoring for more in-depth analysis.

In professional settings, PRTG helps admins keep an eye on their network speed, data transmission, and network throughput. This way, you can identify the areas that are putting too much strain on your network.

Icon Warning

Identify problems much faster

PRTG helps you sort through the many different reasons for a network slowing down. Individual applications may turn out to be bandwidth hogs. Backups can lead to problems with data throughput.

And sometimes the problem lies in an overloaded switch, or an outdated router that is unable to process the increased amount of traffic. PRTG helps you get to the bottom of the issue quickly.

icon centralized monitoring

Save time with centralized monitoring

Open-source software, a complex array of specialized speed test tools, or PRTG all-in-one monitoring software? The choice should be easy. PRTG is a centralized tool that identifies, measures, and tests all the important data in your network, saving you time and stress.

You can also access historical data on bandwidth consumption over longer periods of time, and use the built-in reporting system to create custom reports.

What network speed monitoring looks like in PRTG

Diagnose network issues by continuously tracking network bandwidth usage and speed. Show network traffic flow data, bandwidth utilization, VoIP and QoS measurements, latency, upload and download speeds, and other key metrics in real time. PRODUCT OVERVIEW

“PRTG helps us to keep control of our IT by making issues visible immediately – and everywhere. We always have an eye on the performance and availability of our IT and can react in time if any failures occur. On a long-term perspective, the monitoring data helps us with capacity planning so that we can deliver the required resources for our own systems as well as for our customers, without wasting money on unwarranted redundancies.”

Stein Erik Høybakk, Senior Network Engineer
TAFJORD

“All our production and business processes depend on SAP. But, of course, IT and production systems also play a crucial role in securing these processes. By incorporating SAP, production, and IT into one centralized monitoring system, we can quickly detect critical drops in performance and identify the causes of these issues. In fact, thanks to PRTG and itesys, this couldn’t be any easier.”

Andreas Schmidt, Senior Systems Engineer
Truma

“Any downtime could be detrimental to our customers. We also strive to provide the best possible service to our customers. PRTG allows us to see the health and performance of the network. Using these measurements we can make decisions on how to repair a piece of equipment before it fails and causes a service interruption.”

James Ott Jr., Communications System Technician and IT Administrator

Network Speed Monitoring: FAQ

How is network speed defined?

Network speed, often referred to as network bandwidth or data transfer rate, is defined as the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network connection in a given period of time. It is typically measured in bits per second (bps), along with larger units like kilobits per second (Kbps), megabits per second (Mbps), and gigabits per second (Gbps).

A 100 Mbps connection means:

  • It can theoretically transfer 100 million bits per second.
  • If you download a file, this is equivalent to about 12.5 megabytes per second (as 1 byte = 8 bits).
What is network speed monitoring?

Network speed monitoring is the process of measuring and tracking the performance of a network in terms of its speed, bandwidth utilization, latency, and other related metrics. The goal is to ensure the network operates efficiently, troubleshoot performance issues, and optimize resource usage.

Key components of network speed monitoring include:

  • Bandwidth monitoring: Tracks the amount of data being sent and received over a network.
  • Latency tracking: Measures the delay in data transfer between devices on the network.
  • Throughput analysis: Evaluates the actual data transfer rate compared to the maximum bandwidth.
  • Packet loss monitoring: Detects if and when data packets fail to reach their destination.
  • Jitter analysis: Measures the variability in latency.
  • Network traffic analyzer: Monitors how much of the available network capacity is being used and helps prevent overloading and optimize traffic distribution.
Why should I test network transmission speed?

Testing network transmission speed is important for a variety of reasons, as it provides valuable insights into the performance, reliability, and efficiency of your network. Here are some key reasons why you should regularly test your network transmission speed:

  • Verify internet service provider claims: ISPs often advertise certain speeds for their services (e.g., 100 Mbps). Testing ensures you are receiving the speeds you are paying for.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity issues: Issues like slow downloads, buffering in video streams, or lag in online games may stem from poor network performance. Testing can help isolate whether the problem lies in your network, the server, or the application you are using.
  • Optimize network performance: Testing reveals how well your network handles different types of traffic and whether there is sufficient bandwidth for all connected devices.
  • Plan for upgrades: As more devices and services rely on your network, the demand for bandwidth increases. Testing helps assess whether your current plan and hardware can support growing demands or if upgrades are needed.
  • Detect security threats: Unusually slow network speeds can sometimes indicate malware, unauthorized usage, or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
How does PRTG work as a network speed test tool?
  1. Create three HTTP Advanced sensors for various files found on different servers.
  2. Let the sensors run for a few hours in 5-minute intervals.
  3. The sensor overview provides the bandwidth speed in kbps during the download.

You’ll get a good feel for the possible transmission speed, even if the actual bandwidth is unable to be determined with 100% accuracy. Be sure to practice good judgment when carrying out this procedure to avoid putting unnecessary strain on your data line.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
