PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Use SNMP scanning to unlock the data you need for managing your devices

When it comes to knowing your network inside and out, the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol you can rely on. And with Paessler PRTG SNMP scanner, you can have all the SNMP metrics your heart desires at your fingertips and on your dashboards. Memory usage, network traffic, device temperature, CPU usage, device uptime …the list goes on and on.

Automatically scan for SNMP devices in your network

An SNMP scanner detects SNMP-enabled devices in your infrastructure, and PRTG monitoring software does this as part of its auto-discovery functionality.

Alternatively, you can manually add devices by their IP address. Once the devices are in the device tree, you can set up sensors to collect SNMP monitoring data from them.

Quickly start monitoring with preconfigured sensors

PRTG features out-of-the-box sensors for devices from specific vendors – such as Dell, Cisco, IBM, HPE, and many more.

As well as sensors for specific device types or metrics – such as printers, CPU load, system downtime, and others. This makes setting up your monitoring as easy as it gets.

Create custom SNMP sensors using MIB files and OIDs

Aside from the preconfigured SNMP sensors, PRTG gives you the option to easily create sensors for any SNMP-enabled device you want to monitor.

Either use MIB (Management Information Base) files from the device manufacturer, or manually add OID (object identifier) values yourself for enhanced customization.

icon warning

Proactively manage & troubleshoot your network devices

Need to know when a printer cartridge is about to run out? Or when your router is down? Or when the disk space of a device is approaching the limit?

Just set a warning or error threshold in PRTG that triggers an immediate alert when it is exceeded, and get notified via SMS, email, in-app push notification, and other methods.

What SNMP scanning looks like in PRTG

Diagnose network issues by continuously tracking SNMP monitoring metrics. Show the availability, health, and performance of your SNMP-enabled network devices and other key metrics in real time. Visualize monitoring data in clear graphs and dashboards to identify problems more easily. Gain the overview you need to troubleshoot device issues with SNMP.

Get a complete overview

There’s more to monitoring than just SNMP scanning. PRTG features sensors for many common protocols.

Choose from WMI, SSH, flow (NetFlow, jFlow, sFlow, IPFIX), and many more, which means you get comprehensive monitoring data from your entire IT infrastructure.

Explore our preconfigured PRTG sensors for SNMP scanner

PRTG comes with more than 250 native sensor types for monitoring your entire on-premises, cloud, and hybrid cloud environment out of the box. Check out some examples below!

SNMP Traffic v2

The SNMP Traffic v2 sensor monitors bandwidth and traffic on a device. It can show the following:

  • Number of incoming and outgoing broadcast, multicast, unicast, and non-unicast packets
  • Number of incoming and outgoing discards and errors
  • Total, incoming, and outgoing traffic
  • Number of incoming, unknown protocols

SNMP Trap Receiver

The SNMP Trap Receiver sensor receives and analyzes Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps. . It can show the following:

  • Number of dropped packets on the SNMP trap collector port
  • Number of messages categorized as "error" and “warning”
  • Overall number of received traps

NetFlow v5

The NetFlow v5 sensor receives traffic data from a NetFlow v5-compatible device and shows the traffic by type. This sensor has several filter options to divide traffic into different channels. It can show the following and more:

  • Traffic from Citrix applications
  • Traffic from file transfer (FTP/P2P) and various other protocols (UDP, TCP)
  • Traffic from network services (DHCP, DNS, Ident, ICMP, SNMP)
  • Internet mail traffic (IMAP, POP3, SMTP)
  • Traffic from remote control applications (RDP, SSH, Telnet, Virtual Network Computing (VNC))

SSH SAN System Health

The SSH SAN System Health sensor monitors the system health of a storage area network (SAN) via Secure Shell (SSH). It can show the following:

  • Overall unit status
  • Capacitor cell and pack voltage and voltage status
  • Disk and memory controller temperature and temperature status
  • On-board temperature and temperature status

SNMP Scanner: FAQ

What is SNMP?

SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol and has three key components: managed devices, agents, and network management systems. The protocol is a set of standards for the communication between devices in a TCP/IP network.

What is an SNMP scanner?

An SNMP scanner is usually a part of a network monitoring solution and is a tool used to discover, query and monitor devices within an IP network using the SNMP protocol.

What are OIDs and MIBs?

In terms of SNMP monitoring, OIDS (object identifiers) refer to specific attributes, such as CPU usage, a printer cartridge level, and so on. Devices transmit OIDs as numerical values. MIB (management information base) files are hierarchical files that define what OIDS refer to. To put it simply: MIBs contain OIDs in a well-defined way.

What SNMP versions does PRTG SNMP scanner support?

PRTG monitoring software supports SNMP v1, SNMP v2c and SNMP v3.

What monitoring data can I get with PRTG SNMP scanner?

This depends on the device being monitored. The manufacturer defines what attributes the device’s SNMP agent can communicate, and this is reflected in the device MIB files. Using one of the 150+ pre-configured SNMP sensors in PRTG, or by creating a custom SNMP sensor, you can query metrics from SNMP-enabled devices. In general, a lot of valuable information about devices is usually accessible using SNMP.

What is a sensor in PRTG?

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.

We asked: would you recommend PRTG? Over 95% of our customers say yes!

Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
