Paessler PRTG – The enterprise-grade alternative to Uptime Kuma

Choosing between Paessler PRTG and Uptime Kuma depends on several factors, such as your specific network monitoring needs, budget, and technical resources available in your organization.

PRTG is ideal:

The key difference between Uptime Kuma and PRTG is one of scope. 

Uptime Kuma excels at availability and uptime monitoring. It supports HTTPS, TCP, ICMP, DNS, and Docker health checks, but you won't be able to track CPU, memory, bandwidth, network traffic or other advanced performance metrics. Nor does it support root cause analysis and anomaly detection. 

PRTG, on the other hand, is an all-in-one network monitoring solution. This means that, alongside uptime and availability, it can also keep a close eye on other hardware, software, and virtualized component metrics and even environmental stats like temperature and humidity, giving you a complete picture of your network's health and performance in one place.

Uptime Kuma supports real-time alerting via Slack, Telegram, email, and 70+ other channels, but the feature is limited compared to PRTG. Alerts are generally binary. That is, they're triggered only if the service you're monitoring is up or down. And you can't set up filtering and routing rules based on severity, time of day, type of incident, or other variables. 

Reporting is also limited, with no custom, automated, or scheduled reports available and no support for trend analysis or SLA compliance reports. 

By contrast, PRTG supports all this and more. You can set up multi-level alerts with advanced logic, including notification triggers based on custom thresholds, severity, escalation policies, and dependencies. And you can also customize the content of the notification to ensure the team has all the information they need. Reports are also feature-rich, fully customizable, and can be automated, scheduled, or accessed on demand.

PRTG is highly customizable and has a huge range of functionality, but it's extremely quick and easy to set up. Download PRTG onto a Windows server (or use our cloud-hosted solution) and key in an IP address range. PRTG automatically detects every hardware and software network component in the provided IP range and assigns the appropriate sensors. You can then leave it as is, or tweak your monitoring environment, performance thresholds, and other parameters to suit. 

In comparison, Uptime Kuma's setup is more involved. Because it's a self-hosted monitoring tool, you can only deploy it locally. You'll also need to manually add every service or endpoint you want to monitor and configure each one individually.

In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
