Custom alerts and data visualization let you quickly identify and prevent all kinds of network issues.
There are many good reasons to choose agent-based monitoring: to access metrics SNMP, WMI, and other standard protocols can't collect, to get around connectivity issues, and even to save bandwidth.
The problem is that agents also increase CPU load and consume memory and disk space. And that's before we get into the additional effort required to install, configure, and optimize those agents.
This is why PRTG leaves the choice up to you.
While you can use it as an agent-based monitor if you want to, there's no need to install specialized agents or clients. Which means you can keep a close eye on your entire network, no matter how complex it is, without putting unnecessary strain on your resources and impacting system performance.
With support for unlimited hardware and software network devices; on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid deployment; and the ability to customize every monitoring feature — parameters, thresholds, visualizations, and more — PRTG is as close as it gets to building your own bespoke all-in-one monitoring solution. Plus, it's quick to set up, easy to use, and doesn't needlessly hog precious system resources.

There's a reason PRTG is the network monitoring and IT management tool of choice for 500,000+ sysadmins. Well, several reasons. It's super simple to use. Powerful. Lightweight. And with 100 access to 100 sensors free for life, you can start using it when your infrastructure's still small and scale as your organization grows.
Start monitoring your network right out of the box. PRTG automatically detects network components, assigns the appropriate sensors, and starts collecting monitoring data. But you can also tweak threshold, performance metrics, and other elements to suit.
Need to run your monitoring environment on premise, or want a hybrid setup? With PRTG Network Monitor, you can. Run it locally, host it on a cloud server, or use PRTG Hosted Monitor — our cloud-native network-monitoring solution.
Monitor unlimited devices without installing a single agent or third-party client. PRTG supports SNMP, WMI, Windows performance counters, flow technologies, SSH, HTTP/S, FTP, and DNS, giving you endless options for highly effective but low-impact monitoring.
Unlike Domotz, PRTG doesn't have a minimum monthly commitment. 100 sensors are completely free, for life. And, if you do decide you want to pay for it, we won't lock you in. Our sensor-based subscription model means you only pay for the metrics you want to monitor.

PRTG is set up in a matter of minutes and can be used on a wide variety of mobile devices.
We also compared PRTG with other monitoring tools:
The basic version of the open-source tool Nagios is free of charge. But most users spent many hours to set up and customize the tool. In case of problems, browsing through forums is often the only solution.
Ethereal is a legacy packet sniffing tool acquired by Wireshark. It lacks more comprehensive network monitoring and traffic analysis features which let you keep a close eye on your entire infrastructure.
SolarWinds might be interesting for extremely complex network environments. But it also means you need to invest in higher costs for a platform made up of different modules and add-ons (that cost extra).
Icinga is an open-source monitoring tool offering flexibility but requiring advanced technical knowledge. Its setup and maintenance can be complex, especially for teams lacking dedicated Linux expertise.
Real-time notifications mean faster troubleshooting so that you can act before more serious issues occur.

Moxa is a leading manufacturer of network devices for industrial environments. Together, MXview and PRTG allow for the monitoring of industrial ethernets.
IT that works constitutes a business-critical basis for a company's success. Availability and security must be defined for the respective purpose and closely monitored – by OT and IT alike.

Choosing between Paessler PRTG and Domotz depends on several factors, such as your specific network monitoring needs, budget, and technical resources available in your organization.
PRTG is ideal:
Domotz might be your choice:
While there's no way to automate the migration process, setting up PRTG’s network monitoring software is an intuitive process that takes minutes. Key in an IP address range and PRTG automatically detects every component within that range and assigns the appropriate sensors. You can then customize and configure your monitoring environment as you please, including replicating any custom plugins or scripts you use in Domotz.

Yes. You can only install a PRTG core server or probe on Windows, but our desktop app's interface makes connecting to it via Linux quick and easy. Check the system requirements, download the app, and follow the simple prompts to set things up. Alternatively, try our fully Linux-compatible hosted solution.
We've successfully tested our SSH and SNMP sensors on CentOS, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, macOS, Fedora, Gentoo, Red Hat Enterprise, and OpenSolaris. Our sensors may also work well on other distributions (though we haven't specifically tested them). SNMP sensors work on most operating systems.
In PRTG, “sensors” are the basic monitoring elements. One sensor usually monitors one measured value in your network, for example the traffic of a switch port, the CPU load of a server, or the free space on a disk drive. On average, you need about 5-10 sensors per device or one sensor per switch port.
Paessler conducted trials in over 600 IT departments worldwide to tune its network monitoring software closer to the needs of sysadmins. The result of the survey: over 95% of the participants would recommend PRTG – or already have.
